The men and women who serve in the armed forces sacrifice so much to protect our nation’s freedom. While no gesture can repay them for all that they do, Toyota of Boerne is doing its part to thank the troops.
The team is once again hosting Turkeys for Troops at the dealership in Boerne, Texas. This 7th annual event will take place on Friday, Nov. 17 and will feed thousands of troops and their families. The event has gotten bigger and better each year, and this year is expected to be the biggest one yet.
Active and retired military personnel who would like a turkey need to come to the dealership between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and present a valid military ID. They will receive one frozen turkey per household.
This event has grown so much over the years. Let’s take a look at where it started and where it is now.
The Evolution of Turkeys for Troops
Turkeys for Troops started in 2009. That first year, the dealership handed out 1,000 turkeys to military personnel and their families. At the time, that was deemed a success, but it has grown so much since then.
It doubled to 2,000 turkeys by 2013, and then last year, it managed to give out 4,500 turkeys. This year’s event will be the biggest event yet. The turkey giveaway has increased by 33 percent, amounting to an astonishing 6,000 turkeys for our military service members.
But turkeys aren’t the only thing Toyota of Boerne is giving away at this event. For the fourth consecutive year, organizers will present a wounded military veteran with a mortgage-free home, generously donated by Wells Fargo. The dealership is partnering with the Military Warriors Support Foundation’s “Home4WoundedHeroes” program to sponsor the Family and Financial Mentorship program that comes with being awarded a mortgage-free home.
A Group Effort
Turkeys for Troops might be at Toyota of Boerne, but it is a group effort. The dealership partners with other businesses, and it also utilizes hundreds of volunteers. People from San Antonio and
Boerne volunteer for the event to ensure that service men and women are able to get in and out of the dealership car line quickly. This is a community effort and shows the respect people have for the men and women who serve the country.
“We enjoy holding this event annually because we are proud to support our troops in their constant endeavors to preserve our freedoms that we so often take for granted,” said dealership owner Vic Vaughan. “Toyota of Boerne is a family owned and operated business, and this is simply our family giving thanks to all the brave men and women in uniform.”
This year’s partners and sponsors include Walmart, iHeart Media, KSAT-TV, Dr. Pepper, Security Service Federal Credit Union, and Military Warriors Support Foundation.
